Enhanced Thermal & Chemical Stability of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Boost Worldwide Adoption

Overview
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), which are made of carbon enables manufacturers to obtain high material properties in terms of material strength, electrical & thermal conductivity, and stiffness. MWCNTs consist of multiple layers of graphene rolled to form a concentric structure. Each nanotube may have identical or different diameters, which makes a complex structure. The number of concentric layers vary from six to 25 or more. Surface modification is performed to modify properties of nanotubes to use it for different applications.

The properties of MWCNT include high aspect ratio (typically 100 times the diameter), excellent tensile strength, highly electrically conductive, high thermal stability, and better dispersibility in solutions. MWCNT is preferred over single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) & double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) due to advantages, such as ease in production in huge quantity, low cost per unit, and enhanced thermal & chemical stability.

Researchers from Tarbiat Modarres University, Iran, found a sorbent made up of functionalized MWCNT to eliminate mercury from industrial wastewater. MWCNT was functionalized to adsorb mercury ions through five stages, which included purification, oxidation, amination, melamination, and thiolation. Researchers optimized the process of elimination of mercury from industry wastewater, drinking water, and aqueous solutions using functionalized MWCNT as a sorbent. Applications of MWCNT include advanced ceramics, caulks & sealants, semiconducting materials, membrane & filters, medical implants, Lithium ion batteries, and others.

The advancements in technology to improve the properties of MWCNT creates opportunities for the growth in multi-walled carbon nanotube industry.
